First drawing of 2013, and it's a John Clyde one. =p
(Uhh, actually this was drawn at the end of December, but since it's finished in January, I'll count it as this year...)

This is a younger John and Penny from their college days--well actually, John was the "groundskeeper" of sorts for the college, Penny was a student trying to get a degree in accounting...she got it, too!--and I mentioned in the comments for this pic [link] how John had the habit of pressing flowers (in his brother's books) and that's how Penny met him.
Heh, they both had a bit more hair, and John was rocking some 70s sideburns while Penny had the sort of volume you'd see in the 80s (so don't ask me the exact date, it'll never be specified in the comic ;)), but John had his customary 'stache and shorts. Penny...wore bright colors, apparently. O_o (Don't mock her yellow pants TOO much, at least it shows a sunny personality, right?)
Penny may give off a somewhat serious and exasperated air at times (in the comics) but that's probably from marrying John. She loves him, but it can be trying, dealing with him on a daily basis. She worries about him because he's...eh, somewhat accident prone and not always the best at making "good" decisions. He seems to be rather spontaneous and ruled by impulse, (I blame his parents), whereas Penny has always been more responsible. (Probably being the eldest girl in her family...)

But I digress. ;p
Aren't they a cute couple? I'll have to draw some of their early dates! :aww:

Tools Used:
mechanical pencil
Various erasers
Scanner
Wacom Tablet
The GIMP

*ooo, I don't have a last name for Penny yet before she married John*

Also, loving the tree in the background there! Those leaves look so organic!

Thank you! :thanks:
I've been trying to figure out a way to make trees look cartoony without being TOO simplistic--I want to be able to be pleased with the backgrounds in John Clyde when I pick up comic work again.

Aw, cute backstory :D It seems like John and Penny balance eachother out.

Aye, that's what I love about their relationship--they don't seem like they'd be the most compatible, but because their personalities are a little bit opposite, I like to think they have a very harmonious balance to their marriage. They know how to give and take and have sort of perfected the art of their love for each other.

Thank you very much! :thanks:
I probably don't need to tell you how much that means coming from you, but I shall anyway--your support and encouragement has always been muchos appreciated mi amiga. :highfive:
Heh, I suppose if it weren't for communities like dA and DrunkDuck and the comicker friends I've made here, I wouldn't have progressed the way I have. It's been an inspiration to know you and look on your own work; the support of friends in those "early" years meant a lot to me and I've been thinking back on it as I try to re-find my focus. I think it's very important for the first-time comicker to have the sort of encouragement so many of you have offered...the world would be a very good place indeed if we could ALL give a little bit of that. (I, for one, hope to pass on the kindness wherever I'm able.) ;)

Well it makes me very proud and flattered and tickled (enough adjectives for ya? LOL) that I inspire you. I love helping out other artists and I also love learning from ones way more experienced than I am. Yes, the communities here online are great for that. I find that one of the greatest things about them is just what you said, finding kindred spirits. You can learn from each other. The support is good too. It helps. Without the internet, I wouldn't have many readers of my comics at all. It's so nice to be able to get it out there and, in turn, to see what others have. So much talent out there!!

Before I got on DA and later DD and other sites, I maybe had two or three "followers." Now I am overwhelmed by the response I get on my work. Lots of people badmouth the online communities and I'll never know why. Sure there are negative aspects, but I think the people that poo-poo them so to speak are people that tend to see the negative in everything anyway, know what I mean? :D

And I want to say thank YOU for reading my stuff, you are one of the few that stuck with me in my "down times" and I do appreciate that so much. You are definitely one of my top internet chums! :D :highfive:

Love the textures on the tree and very improved from the comics I saw a few years ago in high school. Looking forward to the upcoming evolution of these characters(and maybe the monster comic if this story gets a conclusion).
